Se crio en el seno de una familia judío ortodoxa y, aunque el antisemitismo estuvo presente en la infancia de Spielberg, su familia no solía hacer alusiones al Holocausto nazi, que muchos años después sería el tema de una de sus mejores películas, La lista de Schindler, basada en la novela de Thomas Keneally.
